On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Jonas Mekas, on Tuesday 4
October, from 7.50 pm, at the CineTeatro Baretti in Turin, Giulia Simi’s
“Jonas Mekas Cinema e vita” will be presented in a talk conducted by
Alessandro Amato; followed by the Italian premiere of “Jonas in the
Fields” (Germany, 2021) by Peter Sempel, dedicated to the last years of
activity of the Lithuanian filmmaker and poet.
Within the programming of the ninth Turin Underground Cinefest, which will take
place from 27 September to 5 October at the CineTeatro Baretti in Turin, there will be a
tribute for the centenary of the birth of Jonas Mekas.
The Lithuanian filmmaker (or “filmer”, as he preferred) and naturalized American poet,
who passed away on January 23, 2019, has left a great void in the international
cinephile community. In order to pay the right tribute to the master of the Diary Film,
as well as precious promoter and archivist of the New American Cinema of the Sixties,
the TUC, proposed by the SystemOut Cultural Association and the Popular University
ArtInMovimento APS and conceived and directed by the director Mauro Russo Rouge,
proposes a special evening. On Tuesday 4 October, from 7.50 pm, “Jonas Mekas
Cinema and Life” by cinema teacher Giulia Simi, the first text in Italian on the author,
will be presented in a talk conducted by film critic Alessandro Amato. The Italian
preview of “Jonas in the Fields” (Germany, 2021) by Peter Sempel, selected in the TUC
Documentaries competition and dedicated to the last years of Mekas’ activity, will
follow.
“For many contemporary directors Jonas Mekas represents the freedom to make films
with life, without the need to invent stories or play a part, but letting reality become
poetry – explains the curator of the section Alessandro Amato -. This year we have
therefore collected the freest and most poetic documentaries among those viewed and
we hope to make a contribution to the memory of him”.
“This tribute that I supported right away is due. The TUC is growing and wants to
become more and more a place for reflection and study, continuing to give visibility to
the best products of independent cinema at an international level”, concludes the artistic
director Mauro Russo Rouge.
