Nine days of independent cinema from 27 September to 5 October 2022 at
the CineTeatro Baretti with 95 films, almost 53 hours of screenings, several
Q&A, the presentation of “Jonas Mekas Cinema and life”, and three new sections.
95 films for the ninth edition of the Torino Underground Cinefest (https://tucfest.com/),
which will be held, from 27 September to 5 October 2022, at the CineTeatro Baretti,
located in via Baretti, 2 in Turin.
For this ninth TUC, organized by the Cultural Association SystemOut and the Popular
University ArtInMovimento, and conceived and directed by the director Mauro Russo
Rouge, 2091 were the products received from all over the world and passed to the
scrutiny of the Selection Committee composed by Alessandro Amato, Alessio Brusco,
Tommaso Paris and Lara Pacchiotti.
The official competition, with cash prizes, presents 60 films in total: 11 in the Feature
Films section, 14 in the Documentaries section and 35 in the Short Films section.
Alongside these, there are, as previously announced, three new sections: “Italian
Showcase”, reserved for Italian productions, with 10 films; the “Experimental” section
with 18 films; and “Insane” with 7 unconventional films.
4 world premieres, 4 European premieres and as many as 50 Italian premieres
characterize the ninth TUC, as it denotes the interest of directors in choosing the Turin
festival as the venue for their national preview.
The ninth edition comes with almost 53 hours of screenings and several meetings with
the authors in the room and recorded. Within this year’s programming, Tuesday 4
October, at 7.50 pm, there will be the presentation of the book by Giulia Simi “Jonas
Mekas Cinema and life” with the presence of the author who will discuss it with
Alessandro Amato. Following will be the screening of the documentary in competition
“Jonas in the Fields” by Peter Sampel, an extraordinary film, shot in five years, between
2015 and 2020, which tells the story of a Lithuanian refugee, Jonas Mekas, who in New
York he became the “father of the American avant-garde”, becoming a great inspiration
for independent cinema, for poetry and for people. Alongside this film, the American
“Wulver’s Stane” by Joseph Cornelison and the German “Somehow” by Aki T.
Weisshaus are also worthy of mention; among the documentaries the Israeli “Smadar”
by Mayan Toledano and the Belgian “My parents’ divorce” by Romy Trajman and
Straumann Levy Anais; among the short films the Cuban “Tundra” by José Luis
Aparicio, the English “Roy” by Tom Berkeley and Ross White and the Brazilian
“Sideral” by Carlos Segundo. The “Insane” section includes the American “Black
Lodge” by Michael Joseph McQuilken while in the “Italian Showcase” “La Caccia” by
Davide Mastrangelo and “Waiters” by Adriano Giotti.
“A rich and intense program, dotted with various moments of reflection and discussion,
hosted for this year only by the historic Cine-Teatro Baretti, which we perceive as a
second home. Right there, from November 17th to May 4th, we proposed Insane
Film_Club with seven monthly untitled screenings-events, to give continuity to the
TUC and to enhance the most significant products of the previous editions. Torino
Underground firmly believes in indie cinema and in the quality of its authors. These are
directors who are often unknown to the general public and, not for this reason, less
talented than other more famous ones. We will continue to support these authors by
providing them with a showcase and an opportunity. Furthermore, I find that the quality
of the products we select grows from year to year. The advent of digital has expanded
the plethora of filmmakers, among which a valid aesthetic result is present on the
whole”, says the artistic director, Mauro Russo Rouge.
